The first wave of performers for the new international music festival “rockinʼon sonic,” which will be held at the Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Hall in Chiba on Saturday, January 4, and Sunday, January 5, 2025, has been announced.
This festival is organized by Rockin’ On Japan, the host of the “ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL,” with Creativeman, the organizer of “SUMMER SONIC,” handling artist bookings and production management. Producer Yoichiro Yamazaki previously mentioned that the festival would focus on inviting highly trusted and up-and-coming artists from the international music scene, using the second and third stages, as well as the food area, of the year-end event “COUNTDOWN JAPAN.”
Six artists were announced in the first wave. Headlining the event are PULP, a legendary UK rock band from Sheffield with over 40 years of history, who resumed activities in 2023 after a nearly 10-year hiatus and recently toured the UK and Ireland, and WEEZER, a Los Angeles band celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album Weezer (Blue Album) and embarking on a North American tour starting in September 2024.
Also joining the lineup are the rock band MANIC STREET PREACHERS from South Wales, who marked their 30th anniversary in 2022, and PRIMAL SCREAM, led by Bobby Gillespie, a Scottish band with over 40 years of history. PRIMAL SCREAM will be releasing their 12th full-length album Come Ahead in November 2024, their first in eight years.
Representing the younger generation of artists are the New York-based brother pop duo THE LEMON TWIGS and the indie rock band WEDNESDAY from Asheville, North Carolina, who performed their first show in Japan in March 2024.
Additionally, PULP, WEEZER, PRIMAL SCREAM, and THE LEMON TWIGS will hold solo performances under the “rockinʼon sonic extra” banner. PULP will perform in Osaka, WEEZER and PRIMAL SCREAM will play in both Osaka and Aichi, and THE LEMON TWIGS will perform in Tokyo and Osaka.
