New Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo Stills Show Shōtarō Mamiya and WWE Star Liv Morgan

New stills have been released from Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, the latest film from director Takashi Miike, opening in Japan on October 23.

Produced in collaboration with Hollywood studio NEON and starring Shun Oguri and Lily James, the crime thriller is set in Tokyo’s underworld. The newly released images offer a closer look at two key characters played by Shōtarō Mamiya and WWE wrestler Liv Morgan.

Mamiya plays Mitsuru Ishizuka, a former member of the Seiryukai crime syndicate and a suspect in a series of gruesome murders. The stills show him wielding a machete in a bloodstained room and reveal an elaborate tattoo of a celestial maiden covering his back.

Miike reportedly sought an actor with particularly expressive eyes for the role. With the killings themselves largely left offscreen, Mamiya uses his gaze and body language to portray a character who shifts between childlike innocence and psychopathic violence. The film also features an unusual scene, conceived by Miike, in which Mamiya’s character plays a piano while completely naked.

Morgan plays Megan Lovesey, the daughter of a prospective US presidential candidate who secretly travels to Japan under the pretext of researching sushi, only to disappear. One of the new images shows her eating sushi in a dimly lit restaurant.

Cast following a remote audition, Morgan prepared for the role by watching Miike’s earlier films, including Audition (2000) and 13 Assassins (2010).

The cast also includes Shuhei Nomura, Nanase Nishino, Yuka Kouri, Takanori Iwata, Keisuke Watanabe, Hideo Nakano, Jun Murakami, Jun Kunimura and Hiroshi Tachi. The film’s theme song, “Raven Sky,” was written and recorded by Ado.
