The live-action adaptation of “Oshi no Ko” has been confirmed. This collaborative project between Amazon and Toei will stream the drama series on Amazon’s Prime Video in the winter of 2024, with the movie set for theatrical release through Toei distribution.
Based on the manga of the same name by Akasaka Aka and Mengo Yokoyari, which began serialization in ‘Weekly Young Jump’ in 2020, “Oshi no Ko” has gained popularity. The anime’s first season aired in 2023, and the opening theme song, YOASOBI’s “Idol,” garnered attention by ranking on global charts, including Billboard.”
The story revolves around twins, Aqua and Ruby, who were reincarnated as legendary idol Ai’s “oshimen” after belonging to the idol group “B Komachi.” They enter the entertainment industry, with Aqua aiming to uncover the truth behind Ai’s death. The role of Ai is portrayed by Asuka Saito, Aqua is played by Kaon Sakurai, and Ruby is portrayed by Nagisa Saito—former members of Nogizaka46 and =LOVE, respectively. Naho Hara plays the role of Kana Arima, a member reuniting with Ruby and “B Komachi,” Ano plays the role of MEM-Cho, and Mizuki Chijima plays the character Akane Kurokawa, an actress belonging to the theater group “Gekidan Lalalai” who harbors romantic feelings for Aqua.
Along with the release of the information, a special visual inspired by the cover of the original comic book was also released. A comment from Akasaka, the author of the original manga, has also been released.
In light of the live-action adaptation of “Oshi no Ko,” I would like to mention that “Oshi no Ko” is a work that makes various references to the entertainment industry. It also touches upon the live-action adaptation of manga works. The commentary is not all positive; it also includes critical remarks. Therefore, I had thought that there might be a possibility that “Oshi no Ko” would not be adapted into a live-action production.
Amidst such considerations, when the decision to proceed with the live-action adaptation was communicated, I couldn’t help but feel the need to ask both the cast and the production team, “Are you sure about this?” To those who have taken on the project, I express my sincere gratitude.
The work “Oshi no Ko,” set in the entertainment industry, offers a perspective not just from the viewpoint of a manga artist but truly from the scene of the entertainment world. I am very curious about the intentions of those who are directly involved in the real-life entertainment industry and what the final outcome will be. Many of you share this curiosity. I hope you join me in witnessing the answers together.
