Spotify’s global and Japanese rankings of the music scene in 2023 have been released.
The most played song in the world in 2023 was “Flowers” by American singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus, which became the fastest song in Spotify history to reach 1 billion plays in May 2023. The song had surpassed 1.6 billion plays at the time of the ranking, making it the fastest-played song in Spotify history at 1 billion plays as of May 2023. The world’s most listened-to artist was Taylor Swift, who released “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” in July and recorded 128 million streams on its first day of release, the most in 2023 at the time and the fifth most of all time. The most-played song in Japan in 2023 was YOASOBI’s “Idol,” which became the fastest-played song in Japan at over 200 million views. The most-played artist in Japan was Mrs. GREEN APPLE, whose song “Dancehall,” released in 2022, recorded the fourth most-played song in Japan. Other albums that reached 1 billion views on Spotify in January 2023 were “ANTENNA” released in July 2023, which became the third most played album in Japan, and “Attitude” released in 2019, which became the fifth most played album in Japan.
The most-played Japanese songs and artists within the international music scene have been announced. In the song rankings, Fuki Fujii’s “Shinunoga E-Wa” secured the top spot for the second consecutive year, followed by “Idol,” Kenshi Yonezu’s “KICK BACK,” and imase’s “NIGHT DANCER.” YOASOBI, Fuki Fujii, and the global girl group XG made successive entries in the artist rankings.
Spotify also released other annual charts for Japan, including the “Official Japanese Spotify Playlist Most Listened to Abroad in 2023,” “Most Played Domestic Music Abroad (ranked by country),” and “Most Played Domestic Music Worldwide by Release Age. In addition, “Spotify Summary 2023,” which allows users around the world to look back at their own 2023 from their listening history on Spotify, was also released at the same time.
