The special exhibition “Rei Naito: come and live – go and live” will be held at the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, Tokyo, from June 25 (Tuesday) through September 23 (Monday and holiday).
Rei Naito is an artist from Hiroshima Prefecture. In 2019, she received the 69th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize (Art Division).
For this exhibition, Naito selected Jomon-era clay artifacts from the Tokyo National Museum (TNM) collection, which has approximately 120,000 items. At the same time, Naito will create a new spatial work by interpreting the architecture and 150 years of history of the Tokyo National Museum from his unique perspective. In Room 5 of the Honkan, one of the exhibition venues, the large armored door that has been closed for many years will be opened, and the carpeting and temporary walls of the exhibition room will be removed, in pursuit of Naito’s desire to be an artist. This allows visitors to appreciate the “naked space” and the natural light that changes depending on the weather and time of day they visit.
In addition, in collaboration with the Hermes Foundation, which co-curated the exhibition, “Rei Naito: Come to Life, Come to Life” will be held at the Ginza Maison Hermes Forum in Tokyo from September 7 (Sat) to January 13, 2025 (Mon), connecting the two venues with a series of paintings and three-dimensional works. The exhibition will be held at Maison Hermes Forum in Ginza, Tokyo.
