Cartier and Japan: A Half-Century of Art and Beauty” will be held at the Tokyo National Museum’s Hyokeikan in Ueno, Tokyo, from June 12 (Wed) to July 28 (Sun).
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Tokyo National Museum (TNM) and Cartier to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Cartier’s first boutique in Japan. The exhibition will reveal the exchange between Cartier and Japanese culture through the “Cartier Collection” consisting of rare archival pieces, private collections, archival documents, and approximately 200 other items. The exhibition space was designed by Studio Adrien Gardère and pays homage to the symmetrical architecture of Hyokeikan, Japan and the Japanese aesthetic.
The exhibition also pays homage to the half-century of history that Cartier and Japan have shared, and includes works by related artists. The right wing of the exhibition, themed “Cartier and Japan,” features Chitose Abe (sacai), Leandro Erlich, Rinko Kawauchi, Keiichi Tahara, Katsuhiko Hibino, Takashi Homma, Kyoko Murase, and others, while the left wing, themed “Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain et des japonaises,” features Shibuya Sho Shibuya, Erina Matsui, Takashi Murakami, Tadanori Yokoo, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Nobuyoshi Araki, Rinko Kawauchi, Daido Moriyama, Sokaimo, Tatsuo Miyajima, Takeshi Kitano, Yukio Nakagawa, Issey Miyake, and others will be exhibited.
In the center of the Hyokeikan is the painting installation “the Fifty Sky Views of Japan” by Sho Shibuya, commissioned by Cartier to commemorate Cartier Japan’s 50th anniversary. In accordance with Hiroshige Utagawa’s “53 Stages of the Tokaido,” a series of 50 paintings depicting the sky on the front page of a daily regional newspaper, starting from Nihonbashi and visiting all prefectures, will be exhibited.
Details, including tickets, will be announced on the Tokyo National Museum website at a later date.
