Haruomi Hosono’s soundtrack for the upcoming film “Undercurrent” will be released.
The music for the film “Undercurrent,” which will be released in theaters on October 6 (Fri.), is Hosono’s reworking of several images that accompanied the film and will be available on music platforms from October 4 (Wed.), with a limited analog release in January 2024. Hosono also commented on the release of the album.
“Undercurrent” is a film based on the manga of the same title by Tetsuya Toyoda and directed by Rikiya Imaizumi. Kanae, the owner of a public bathhouse whose husband Satoru has suddenly disappeared, lives with a mysterious man named Hori who comes to work at the bathhouse. The story is about the characters’ undercurrents, which are intertwined with each other. Kanae is played by Yoko Maki, Hori by Arata Iura, Yamazaki by Lily Franky, Satoru by Eita Nagayama, and Kanno by Noriko Eguchi.
Comment from Haruomi Hosono
I reconstructed many of the images that accompanied the film “Undercurrent.” For the film, I made the sound fragments as simple and bare-bones as possible. I thought if I make the perfect soundtrack for the film, there would be no room for it to blend into the film. Therefore, it was necessary to reconstruct the world of music when putting the album together. However, I did’nt use any material other than what I created for the film. This is how I envisioned “Undercurrent,” a film where serenity and intensity coexist.
