A 4K restored version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time by Mamoru Hosoda is heading back to theaters nationwide on July 3, with the beloved anime classic set to screen at 161 cinemas across Japan.
The newly unveiled 4K restoration preserves the film’s original color design while using modern technology to dramatically enhance image clarity and transparency. Noise and color haze have been carefully removed, bringing sharper detail to the film’s cityscapes, summer skies, and delicate background artwork. Rather than reinventing the visuals, the restoration aims to faithfully revive the film’s signature “fresh summer” atmosphere.
The film also officially launched its TikTok presence on May 20, beginning with the release of the 4K trailer. Iconic scenes from the movie are expected to be shared on the platform in the coming weeks.
Alongside the announcement, 14 additional theaters were confirmed as part of the second wave of screening locations, bringing the nationwide total to 161 cinemas, with more venues expected to be added. Special admission gifts and additional campaign details will be announced at a later date.
Based on the novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time originally premiered in 2006 at just six theaters before expanding nationwide through word of mouth. The film eventually screened at more than 100 cinemas during a remarkable 40 week run, earning international acclaim and becoming one of the defining works that established Hosoda’s global reputation.
A traveling exhibition titled “The Creative Origins of Mamoru Hosoda” Exhibition is also scheduled to tour Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka beginning in June.
