The movie “Summer Wars” will have a limited two-week revival screening starting Friday, July 26.
The film was released in 2009 and was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who also directed “Belle” in 2021 and “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” in 2006. It was the first film to win the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, the highest award at the 24th Digital Contents Grand Prix, and also won the Best Animated Film Award at the 33rd Japan Academy Awards. The film was produced by Madhouse, which has produced many animation works including “DEATH NOTE” and “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”.
Set in the summer of Japan, the film tells the story of Kenji Koiso, a high school student who failed to make the Japanese team for the Math Olympiad. On the night he is invited by Natsuki Shinohara, a senior he admires, to celebrate the 90th birthday of her great-grandmother, Sakae Jinnouchi, in Ueda, Nagano, he receives a mysterious e-mail containing several rows of numbers. This is the story of the Jinnouchi family’s relatives and Kenji’s mathematical ability to tackle the confusion between the virtual world of “OZ” on the Internet and the real world that ensues as a result of this.
This revival screening was sponsored by Filmarks, a movie review service. The screening period is a memorial period including August 1, the birthday of Sakae Jinnouchi, which is also celebrated by the relatives in the film.
Original special offers will be distributed to visitors. KADOKAWA, which produced the film, has announced plans to collaborate with the “Kyoto International Manga and Anime Fair (KYO-MAFU) 2024” to be held in September, as well as with Ueda, Shinshu, which served as the model for the film’s setting. Details will be announced later.
On June 30 (Sun), “Summer Wars Film Concert” with a live orchestra will be held at Hall A of Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho, Tokyo, as an event commemorating the 15th anniversary of the release of “Summer Wars”. Tickets are now on sale to the general public.
