The details for Ryuichi Sakamoto | Seeing Sound, Hearing Time, an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, have been revealed. The exhibition will run from December 21, 2024, to March 30, 2025.
Curated around the exhibition concept Sakamoto envisioned for the museum before his passing, the show focuses on his long-standing interests in sound and time. It will feature about 10 immersive sound installations, combining new, previously unseen works with some of his most renowned pieces. Six collaborative artists have been announced, and the exhibition layout, which will span both indoor and outdoor spaces, has been shared.
On the first floor of the Special Exhibition Gallery, new works by Sakamoto and Shiro Takata, along with a new piece by Carsten Nicolai, will be displayed. On the underground second floor, installations from the async series, created with Zakkubalan, Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Takata, will be shown, along with Durmiente by Apichatpong, making its Japan debut. Additionally, a new installation recreating Sakamoto’s 1996–97 performance with Toshio Iwai will be unveiled as part of an archival display.
Outdoors in the first-floor courtyard, Sensing Streams 2024–Invisible, Unhearable (MOT version), a collaboration with Daito Manabe, will explore electromagnetic waves as an invisible “stream” that humans can’t perceive. In the underground Sunken Garden, a special collaborative work titled LIFE–WELL TOKYO: Fog Sculpture #47662 by Sakamoto, Fujiko Nakaya, and Takata will also be presented.
