Kisshomaru Shimamura’s photo exhibition what is good? will be held at GALLERY X BY PARCO in Shibuya, Tokyo, from September 6 (Friday) to September 23 (Monday, public holiday).
This exhibition, which precedes the release of Shimamura’s first photobook what is good? on September 25 (Wednesday), serves as a launch event. The photobook features approximately 200 images selected from Shimamura’s career spanning the past decade, capturing moments from cities around the world including Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Laos, New York, and Portland. The collection explores the question of what “good” truly means.
— Why do I take photographs?
For me, photography is a way to communicate with people and the world around me.
Photography is like breathing. Honestly, there are moments I can’t explain or even remember why I captured them.
Yet, I believe that every moment was undoubtedly “good” for me.
It is both absolute and relative. It is both universal and personal.
–(Excerpt from the words of Kishomaru Shimamura)
The photo exhibition will feature an advance release of the photo book, a display of the works included in the collection, and the sale of original merchandise. On the opening day, September 6 (Friday), a launch event talk show will be held, featuring Shimomura, graphic designer Riku Hoshika, and editor Moe Nishiyama. Additionally, a book signing by Shimomura will take place on September 7 (Saturday). The talk show does not require reservations and has a 500 yen entry fee, while the book signing will issue numbered tickets to those who purchase books or other items totaling 4,400 yen or more (including tax) at the venue.
After the Shibuya exhibition, the show will travel to Aohata bookstore in Yakuin, Fukuoka, C7C gallery and shop in Nagoya, and BOOK AND SONS in Gakugei Daigaku, Tokyo. A Kyoto venue is also confirmed, with the dates yet to be announced.
