Takeshi Kitano’s Directed, Written, and Edited Film ‘Broken Rage’ Set for Global Release on Prime Video Starting February 14, Official Trailer Revealed
‘Broken Rage,’ directed, written, and edited by Takeshi Kitano, will be globally available for streaming on Prime Video starting February 14. The official trailer has been released.
The film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios as an Amazon Original, revolves around the theme of “comedy in violent films.” With a runtime of approximately 60 minutes, the first half showcases a gritty crime action as a hitman caught between the police and yakuza fights for survival in an underground world. The latter half of the film replays the same story with a comedic self-parody. Takeshi Kitano plays the protagonist, a hitman named Nezumi, while Tadanobu Asano and Nao Omori play detectives trying to involve Nezumi, undercover as a drug enforcement officer.
Kitano described the project as a test to explore a modern “pace” suitable for streaming content on TV screens, contrasting it with the traditional “pacing” of theatrical films. Broken Rage has already garnered attention on the global stage, having been officially selected for the 81st Venice International Film Festival as a Japanese streaming film in 2024.
The trailer introduces scenes where Nezumi, arrested for murder, is coerced into infiltrating a drug syndicate, alongside tense, action-packed sequences. The original score by pianist Shinya Kiyozuka heightens the suspense, while comedic moments also appear. The trailer also teases performances by comedian Hitori Gekidan as a mysterious host, Masaki Hasegawa (Nishikigoi) as a yakuza boss, Azusa Baba as a hostess, Mogura Suzuki (Kuuki Kaidan) as an ophthalmologist, and Shira Maeda (Bikoen!) as a police officer, marking their first appearances in a Kitano film.

New stills have been released featuring Takeshi Kitano, Tadanobu Asano, Nao Omori, and other cast members, along with Shido Nakamura playing a Yakuza boss controlling the drug trade, and Hakuryu portraying a young boss. With an experimental approach aiming to defy the conventions of the film industry, Kitano’s unorthodox direction and unpredictable plot twists are generating high anticipation for the film.
