A new music video for Kenshi Yonezu’s “Donut Hole,” released under his Hachi alias, has just been revealed.
Originally released in October 2013 using VOCALOID GUMI, the track has remained popular, surpassing 10 million views on Nico Nico Douga and 60 million views on YouTube. Back then, Hachi (Yonezu) personally handled both the music and video production, commenting that he “aimed for a style reminiscent of boys’ manga.”
The new music video, released 11 years later, features GUMI, Hatsune Miku, Megurine Luka, and Kagamine Rin, all based on newly illustrated original designs and concepts by Hachi (Kenshi Yonezu). Centered around the key phrase “It’s okay to be broken,” which Yonezu established in his sixth album LOST CORNER, the video presents a new narrative featuring four characters working in a waste collection business.
The new music video was directed by Yuki Kamiya, an animation director known for his work on Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. The character animation design was handled by Takahiro Chiba, the chief animation director for the Haikyuu!! series, while Production I.G, known for titles like Kaiju No. 8 and the Ghost in the Shell series, took care of the production. This project marks the first production from BLUE RIGHTS, a new company founded by Makoto Kimura, who previously served as a director and head of the rights department at the animation studio MAPPA.
The new music video for “Donut Hole” was released simultaneously on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube. The opening line of the video description is the same as it was at the time of the original release in 2013: “Hello, this is Hachi.”
Additionally, the “GODIVA×HACHI Donut Hole Collection” will be released starting October 1 (Tuesday). This collection includes chocolate prints featuring new original artwork from “Donut Hole” and a specially crafted “Donut Chocolat” by Godiva, all presented in an original design box. This is the first time Godiva has launched a collection lineup in collaboration with an artist. The products will be available at Godiva shops nationwide, GODIVA cafés, and the Godiva online shop.
Furthermore, Yonezu’s official X (formerly Twitter) account has shared episodes related to the new music video and “Donut Hole.”
