The third edition of DEFOAMAT, an urban art and music festival, will take place on October 19 (Sat) and 20 (Sun) across four venues in Daikanyama, Tokyo. The festival’s latest lineup of participating artists and additional programs have been announced.
The event, themed around “alternative Asian life,” explores new social paradigms through art and music. It will feature performances, art exhibits, an outdoor market focusing on Asian culture, and talks on alternative societal structures at four venues: Daikanyama T-SITE, Daikanyama Forestgate, UNIT/SALOON, and Hareta-ra Sora ni Mame Maite.
Newly announced additions include:
- Music Live: VIDEOTAPEMUSIC, a musician and video director from Kakubarhythm known for creating audiovisual works by sampling various video tapes from around the world, will perform.
- Talk Sessions:
- The first session features a dialogue between Usui Sako, former president of Kyoto Seika University and space anthropologist researching the relationship between society and architecture, and Junko Maruyama, a professor at Tsuda University studying the community dynamics of the Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert.
- The second session includes a discussion between Hiroshi Ito of Nariwai, who works on integrating work, play, and lifestyle, and Ayumi Horita, a visiting researcher at Ritsumeikan University’s Center for Sustainability Studies, focusing on the material and information culture of Mongolian nomads.
Additionally, a collaborative program includes an exhibition by Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho, titled MORE LOVE ABOVE THE PEACE, currently on display at ART FRONT GALLERY in Daikanyama until October 20.
The market at Daikanyama T-SITE will feature:
- A food truck by es.tokyo offering Indonesian specialty nasi goreng.
- ONE POT WONDER, a craft food and drink select shop.
- Initial A Store with Maeda Confectionery Union, offering seasonal ingredient gelato and headphones with planar magnetic drivers.
- Daikanyama Tsutaya Bookstore will also have a booth selling rare books.
The music performances at DEFOAMAT will occur on October 19, with tickets available for general purchase on ePlus. Art exhibits, talk events, and the market are free to enter. Further details will be announced on the official website and other platforms.
