From June 28 (Fri.) to August 22 (Thu.), “Small Cruise,” an exhibition of works by photographer Naoki Honjo, will be held at art cruise gallery by Baycrew’s in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo.
Naoki Honjo is a photographer known for his style of using a 4 x 5 field camera (large format camera) called a “shinogo” to take miniature photographs of people and landscapes, etc. He won the 32nd Ihei Kimura Award for his 2006 photo collection “small planet” and will hold his first large-scale solo exhibition “Small Cruise” in 2022. In 2022, he held his first large-scale solo exhibition “un (real) utopia” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
The exhibition, held at a gallery operated by BAYCREW’S Inc. as a place where art and fashion, which are both essential in our lifestyles, intersect, will feature Honjo’s representative work “small planet,” and a collection of his photographs from “Tokyo,” “Kyoto,” “tohoku311,” “plastic nature,” and “kenya. The exhibition will feature a total of 32 works, including Honjo’s representative work “small planet,” as well as new works selected from his photo collections such as “Tokyo,” “Kyoto,” “tohoku311,” “plastic nature,” and “kenya,” without specifying the year, area or theme. The exhibition is designed to draw attention to the warm gaze of Honjo, who uses words such as “fiction” and “unreality” to describe his photographs, toward “towns” and “people.
Naoki Honjo
Born in Tokyo in 1978. Graduated from Tokyo Polytechnic University, Department of Media Art, Graduate School of Arts. He uses a large-format film camera with bellows to photograph landscapes as if they were dioramas, creating works with a unique technique. He is the author of “small planet” (Little More, 2006) won the Ihei Kimura Photography Award. While continuing to produce works, he has been active in a wide range of activities, including serializing his work in the ANA in-flight magazine “Tsubasa no Okoku” (Kingdom of Wings). His works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
