A photography exhibition featuring the works of Saul Leiter will take place at the art cruise gallery by Baycrew’s in Toranomon, Tokyo, from October 25 (Friday) to January 13, 2025 (Monday).
Saul Leiter captured vibrant, poetic snippets of life hidden in the streets of New York through his lens, much of which remained unknown during his lifetime. He moved from Pittsburgh to New York at the age of 23 in 1946 and enjoyed success as a fashion photographer. However, after retreating from the public eye in his 50s, he led a quiet life, rarely straying from his neighborhood and following his own aesthetic vision. His return to prominence as a pioneer of color photography came with the release of the photo book Early Color by Steidl in 2006. This was followed by the documentary Finding Vivian Maier, and Leiter’s acclaim continued to grow even after his passing in 2013. In 2014, the Saul Leiter Foundation was established to catalog his extensive, previously unorganized collection of color slides.
The exhibition will showcase 44 newly printed slides discovered after his death, presented for the first time in Japan under the guidance of the Saul Leiter Foundation. “Photography is often seen as a way to capture significant moments, but what it truly captures is the endless world.”
