As part of the program of “Setagaya Art Farm 2024,” performances by Machine de Cirque, a company from Quebec, Canada, will be held in July and Le Gros Orteil will be held in August.
“Setagaya Art Farm” is a new summer arts festival to be launched by Setagaya Public Theatre in Sangenjaya, Tokyo in 2024. It was established as a place where people can come into contact with a variety of art forms through performances and workshops, including theater/dance.
Machine de Cirque, which will perform in July, is a circus company established in 2013 that has gained international acclaim for its work that skillfully combines high-level circus techniques with elements of music, theater performance, and technology. The company will be in Japan for the first time in 2018.
“Ghost Light,” which will be performed in the main theater of Setagaya Public Theatre, is a duo piece that uses only a teeterboard (seesaw) as a motif for the stage, based on the motif of a nightlight in a theater after the curtain goes down. It is a non-verbal theater performance that mixes the performers’ superb acrobatics with fantastic lights and upbeat music.
Le Gros Orteil, which will perform in August, is a performance company featuring works that fuse clowning with elements of theater and circus, and this will be their first visit to Japan. “The Librarian”, which will be performed at the Theater Tram (small theater), is a non-verbal theater featuring a librarian who loves books, and depicts how he becomes a character in a series of books through various performances including acrobatics/juggling. The performer, Hippolyte, has learned to speak Japanese for this performance, and three of the four performances will be in Japanese and one in French. The production will be performed on August 3 (Sat.) and 4 (Sun.) at the Matsumoto Shimin Geijutsukan Small Hall in Nagano, and on August 12 (Mon.) at the Kasugai City Tobu Shimin Center in Aichi Prefecture.
Tickets will go on sale on May 26 (Sun) for Setagaya Public Theatre Tomonokai members, and on June 1 (Sat) for Setagaya Public Theatre Online Ticket members, U24 members, and Setagaya Arts Card members. General tickets will go on sale on June 2 (Sun.).
