OPULENCE, a drag show from Japan, will be held on Sunday, May 19 at Zepp Shinjuku in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
OPULENCE is a festival of drag queens who appeared in RuPaul’s Drag Race ” hosted by RuPaul, the Godfather of American drag, and drag queens from Japan. The festival features spectacular shows by the queens and meet-and-greets with the queens. The last time the event was held, the world’s leading queens such as Kylie Sonique Love, Trinity The Tuck, and Manila Luzon appeared on stage.
This fourth edition of the OPULENCE series features Alaska, Courtney Act, and Willam, three artists who also perform as a group under the name “AAA Girls”. From Japan, Vera Strondh, a leading young queen, and others will perform.
In addition, OPULENCE will hold a drag queen event “Sparkle” as an official party at “Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2024” starting on Friday, April 19. The event will be held at ComMunE, a rooftop café at Shibuya Parco in Tokyo, and a queen contest is also planned with the right to participate in OPULENCE. The selected queens will perform at “OPULENCE” in May and compete in the final showdown.
Drag show is a comprehensive entertainment and performance art that combines club music, lighting, sound, dancing, lip-syncing, and MCing with men (drag queens) in creative and glamorous costumes and makeup.
Drag culture is also a history of gay resistance. In the 1950s, when homosexuality was illegal and gay bashing continued, gay men were killed in New Orleans, and local gays began to participate in the carnival “Ludi-Gras” in flamboyant costumes parodying traditional/aristocratic styles as a form of resistance. The documentary “Paris, the Night Never Sleeps,” about the black and Latino gays of ball culture in New York City in the 1980s, is the bible of gay culture and is also the subject of the film “Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Ru Paul’s Drag Race” was also inspired by ball culture and was born.
