Dos Monos Announces Second Chapter as a Trio New Album “Dos Atomos” to Drop in May

Dos Monos declares the start of its second phase of activities and will release a new album “Dos Atomos” in May.

Dos Monos is a rap trio consisting of MC/trackmaker So Shit, MC TaiTan, and MC/DJ Botsu aka NGS, who have performed at various domestic and international events/festivals, including “Summer Sonic,” and actively collaborated with a wide range of genres beyond musicians. They actively collaborated in a wide range of genres beyond musicianship. However, after the release of “Dos City (Deluxe)” and “DMAN [excerpt] ” in 2023, the first phase of their activities came to an end, and it was announced that “Dos Monos Phase II” would begin in March 2024.

“Dos” and “Monos” mean “2” and “monkeys” respectively in Spanish, and the first phase of Dos Monos aimed to be an alternative to the current scene as “Monkey 2.0” (a bug in the human world with a different evolution from humans). Even the title of their debut album “Dos City (Another City)” reflected their strong rebellious spirit against being categorized simply as “Tokyo music” as they didn’t want their music as Tokyo natives to be lumped together.

However, while touring worldwide, they realized that simply being alternative was almost an obvious premise outside Japan. The world-class artists they performed with all had their roots, making their music convincing. They felt recognized and listened to as “alternative from Japan,” for better or worse.

Moreover, each member was on the verge of working individually, making the group almost prone to dissolution. During a flight back from an exhausting European tour, I shared the key idea for the next album with the members (I was surprised myself that I had such thoughts while speaking in a daze), and the previous sense of weariness suddenly lifted like the sun breaking through the clouds.

Inspired by this experience, we decided to redefine ourselves and, by extension, the essence of Japan as the concept for the second phase of Dos Monos.

“Monos” means “monkeys” in Spanish, but in Greek, “Monos” translates to “single,” which is very close in meaning to “Atomos,” the Greek origin of “Atom” and “indivisible.” The second phase of Dos Monos adopts this meaning, discarding the representation that somewhat followed the stereotype of “Dos Monkeys” and instead embracing their more essential selves as “Dos Atomos,” representing the core. In other words, aiming for an alternative akin to the shining sun formed by nuclear fusion, Dos Monos starts anew.

It has also been decided that “Dos Atomos Release Party – Theater D vol.4” will be held on June 15 (Sat) at LIQUIDROOM in Ebisu, Tokyo. The event will feature special guests, and tickets are available for pre-order on e-plus until April 10 (Wed.).
