The film ‘Oppenheimer,’ which will be released in Japan on March 29 (Fri.), will be shown simultaneously at 50 IMAX theaters nationwide. In conjunction with the release, a making-of-cut shot with an IMAX camera was shown.
The film is based on the true story of the life of Oppenheimer, the American physicist and scientific genius who developed the atomic bomb during World War II, and depicts his glory and downfall. Directed/written by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Killian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh. The film won a record five Golden Globes at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, and has been nominated for a record 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 96th Academy Awards, which will be announced in March.
The making-of featurette released today shows cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema shooting with an IMAX camera under the direction of Nolan. Van Hoytema, who was also nominated for Best Cinematography at the 96th Academy Awards, has worked with Nolan on every feature film since “Interstellar. For “Oppenheimer,” Nolan used the highest-resolution cinematography possible, combining an IMAX 65mm camera with a 65mm large-format film camera. The film was the first ever to be shot in IMAX monochrome analog using monochrome film for 65mm cameras, which was developed exclusively for this film.
Nolan wrote the scenes told from Oppenheimer’s point of view in the first person, which is unique for a film script, and used color images. They are montaged with emotionally-charged abstract images that symbolically represent his inner life. In addition, scenes centering on Louis Strouse, who had a great influence on U.S. atomic energy policy after World War II, are visually depicted with black-and-white images. Nolan’s comments on why he chose this style of filming were also released.
The filming style adopted by myself and Hoyte is exceedingly simple yet potent. There are no barriers between the world of the movie and the audience, except for the monochrome visuals; it is unadorned and lacks stylization. Particularly in the scenes with color, we aimed for an unpretentious and straightforward aesthetic. We sought visuals that are as natural as possible, conveying the texture of the world. Whether it was costumes, sets, or locations, we pursued the intricate details of the real world.
