The Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2024, which took place on January 1 (Monday, a holiday), has had repercussions on art institutions in the Hokuriku region.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, located in Ishikawa Prefecture, has undergone temporary closure since the start of the year for facility maintenance and repairs. Alongside this, several other programs have been either canceled or put on hold.
The National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa and the Kutani Pottery Museum in Kaga are set to resume operations on Saturday, January 6. Meanwhile, the Wajima Lacquer Art Museum (Wajima Nuri Kaikan) in Wajima City, the Space Science Museum Cosmo Isle Hakui in Hakui, the Notojima Glass Art Museum in Nanao City, the Noto Satoyama Satoumi Museum, and Le Musee de Ashe Hirohiro Tsujiguchi Museum (Wakura) have temporarily closed their doors.
In Noto Town, small exhibitions and art displays at the Noto Town Museum of Art (Hane Manzo Art Museum) have been postponed, with no confirmed reopening date. In the vicinity of the earthquake’s epicenter, some facilities are awaiting official information. The Suzu Pottery Museum in Suzu City has reported exhibit damage and is currently in temporary closure. Ishikawa Prefecture has urged residents to refrain from non-essential and non-urgent travel to the Noto area.
In Toyama Prefecture, the Glass Art Museum in Toyama City is set to undergo closure for inspection until Sunday, January 14. Conversely, the Shiokaze Gallery in Himi City reopened on Saturday, January 6, following its closure at the start of the year. Similarly, Artcore, situated in Awara City, Fukui Prefecture, resumed operations on Saturday, January 6.
