Art facilities in the Hokuriku region have been affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2024 on Monday, January 1.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, is currently undergoing temporary closure for facility and equipment inspection and maintenance. Concurrently, exhibitions such as “Collection Exhibition 2: Electricity – Sound” and “Special Exhibition: Ryoji Ikeda” are temporarily on hold.
The Nanao Art Museum in Ishikawa Prefecture’s Nanao City has temporarily closed, while the National Museum of Arts and Crafts in Kanazawa City will be closed on Friday, January 5, resuming regular operations after a series of temporary closures. Similarly, the Kutani Pottery Museum in Kaga City is closed until Friday, January 5, with no subsequent opening planned. Cosmo Isle Hakui, the space science museum in Hakui City, will undergo a safety check, resulting in temporary closure on Friday, January 5. In contrast, the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art and the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History in Kanazawa will remain open on Thursday, January 4, allowing visitors to explore special and collection exhibitions.
There is no official information available concerning facilities in Suzu City and Wajima City, which are situated closer to the earthquake’s epicenter. Reports suggest that the Nagai Go Memorial Museum and Wajima Drama Memorial Museum in Wajima City were damaged and potentially destroyed in a fire that erupted in the Asaichi Street area.
The Toyama City Museum of Glass Art in Toyama Prefecture has declared a temporary closure until Monday, January 8 (a national holiday). Meanwhile, the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art, located in the same city, will maintain its regular opening hours and is offering refunds to ticket holders unable to visit the museum due to the earthquake.
Kanaz Forest of Creation in Awara City, Fukui Prefecture, will undergo a temporary closure until January 5 (Friday) for safety inspections and facility cleaning. However, the creative and glass studios will remain open during regular hours.
