Floating Points and Paula Tape will perform at “NEW YEAR EVE PARTY 2023→2024” at ZEROTOKYO in Shinjuku, Tokyo, on Saturday, December 31.
Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points, who will headline the event, is a musician / DJ / producer active mainly in the UK. He received his classical education as a child at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, and later went on to complete a PhD in Neurology at UCL (University College London).
As Floating Points, they burst onto the scene in the late 2000s and released their first album, Elaenia, in 2015. The album was critically acclaimed in various places, including being named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, and in 2019 they released their second album “Crush” on the prestigious UK label Ninja Tune.
Five years in the making, “Elaenia” blurs the boundaries between various genres such as jazz, classical, electronica, psychedelic rock, and Brazilian pop. On the other hand, “Crush,” created in just five weeks, is the result of his musical maturity and skill as a composer combined with a sense of improvisation and initial impulse.
The album Promises, released in 2021, is the result of Sam and Pharaoh Sanders teaming up with the London Symphony Orchestra. With Pharaoh’s saxophone and voice dynamically resonating with Sam’s minimal and static sound, the album slowly but surely emerges before the listener with a certain physicality.
In 2022, he participated as a producer on Hikaru Utada’s album “BAD Mode,” which attracted a great deal of attention. The album’s title track “BAD Mode,” “Not In The Mood,” “Somewhere Near Marseilles The album’s title track “BAD Mode,” “Not In The Mood,” and “Somewhere Near Marseilles” were written with Hikaru Utada. The piano phrase in “BAD Mode,” the development of the second half of “Not In The Mood,” and “Somewhere Near Marseilles Marseilles The “Floating Points-ness” can be felt in many passages, such as the sound textures that are commonly found in “Somewhere Near Marseilles”.
A live DJ mix of Floating Points recorded at VENT, Tokyo during their 2019 Japan tour is also available. The three-hour long set incorporates his roots in every direction, from jazz, disco, funk, house, techno, and grime. We look forward to seeing what he will play on his upcoming visit to Japan.
Paula Tape is a DJ/producer from Chile. She started her career as a drummer in metal and indie electro bands, and began DJing while studying fashion design. The experience of scavenging old tracks from her time in bands eventually gave her a passion for the constant digging.
Known for her vast knowledge of the Balearic sound*, Paula Tape has performed at major festivals around the world, including Awakenings and Nuits sonores. She has performed at Berghain / Panorama bar in Berlin, which is considered one of the best clubs in the world, Pikes Hotel in Ibiza, where DJ Harvey is the resident, and Amsterdam Dance Event, one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world. He is a top-runner and the most notable female DJ in the world today.
Balearic = Balearic Islands is the name of an archipelago of islands in the Mediterranean Sea in southern Spain, including the island of Ibiza. It is one of the world’s leading resort areas and a sacred place for nightlife where club music lovers gather. Balearic sound is not a musical genre, but a general term for a lyrical mood, like the chill sound on the beach at sunset.
In 2021, the EP “Astro Turismo” was released on the UK label Rhythm Section International, a leader in the contemporary club scene. The work is a disco house with an exhilarating and disarming sense of Italo (Italian) synth use and tropical Balearic atmosphere.
Paula Tape is also involved in the creation of TEMPO DISCHI, a label dedicated to the reissue of 1980s Italian Italo disco. The label represses and sells old lost masterpieces such as Automat’s “Automat” and Boss Man’s “Steel Mind”.
