A tribute screening of films directed by David Lynch, who passed away on January 15 (Wednesday), has been confirmed.
David Lynch made his feature film directorial debut in 1977 with ‘Eraserhead.’ Known for his unsettling style that blends elements of surrealism, horror, mystery, and film noir, he earned the title of “King of Cult.” In 1990, he won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 43rd Cannes Film Festival for ‘Wild at Heart.’ He was nominated for three Academy Awards and was honored with an Academy Honorary Award in 2019.
Three of his films will be screened in tribute. Starting February 14 (Friday), ‘Eraserhead.’ and ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me’ will be shown at theaters such as 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku in Tokyo. From March 21 (Friday), ‘Lost Highway’ will be screened at Kadokawa Cinema Yurakucho in Tokyo. All screenings will be in 4K, and the 4K screening of ‘Lost Highway’ will be the first in Japan.
‘Eraserhead’ is a cult classic, created over five years as an independent production. The film depicts a man with a messy head who slowly loses his sanity while caring for a bizarre baby, all captured in eerie black-and-white visuals.

Released in 1992, ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me’ is the theatrical film adaptation of the globally popular television series ‘Twin Peaks.’ It serves as a prequel, depicting the events leading up to a series of murders in the small town of Twin Peaks.

‘Lost Highway,’ released in 1997, is a psychological thriller said to have been inspired by the O.J. Simpson case. The soundtrack, produced by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, has also created a large fan base.

Starting January 24 (Friday), the 4K restoration of ‘Mulholland Drive,’ which won the Best Director Award at the 54th Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Director at the 74th Academy Awards, will be screened as a tribute. It is scheduled to be shown at approximately 20 theaters nationwide until March. Additionally, from February 7 (Friday), the 4K remastered version of Blue Velvet, which earned a Best Director nomination at the 59th Academy Awards, will be screened at Cinema Qualite in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This screening had been planned during his lifetime.
