A24’s critically acclaimed film ‘TUESDAY,’ which premiered in North America in 2024, is set to be released in Japan on April 4. Alongside the announcement, the Japanese version of the film’s poster and trailer have been revealed.
Directed by Croatian filmmaker Daina O. Pusić in her feature debut, ‘TUESDAY’ has been praised for its imaginative portrayal of death, blending humor, surprise, and deep emotion. The story follows Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl with only a short time left to live. One day, she is visited by Death, a mystical bird that roams the Earth, heralding the end of life. However, instead of surrendering to her fate, Tuesday cracks a joke that makes Death laugh, managing to delay the inevitable. Meanwhile, her mother, Zora, desperately battles to keep Death away from her daughter. The enigmatic bird, which at times smokes a cigarette and even raps Ice Cube’s It Was A Good Day, adds an unconventional charm to the narrative. As Tuesday and Zora confront the reality of their situation, the film explores their emotional journey toward acceptance. The film stars Lola Petticrew as Tuesday and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Zora.
The Japanese poster features Death, inspired by a macaw, positioned upside-down. Below, ‘TUESDAY’ is seen being carried on Zora’s back, walking into a dark forest. The tagline along Death’s beak reads, “I’ve come to take you away,” symbolizing the passage to the afterlife while also capturing the bird’s peculiar yet endearing presence.
The trailer introduces Death with an eerie soundtrack, showing it soaring through the sky as a voiceover describes its role in signaling the end of life. Zora fiercely resists the bird’s presence, but Death effortlessly shifts its form—shrinking to a handheld size or expanding into an imposing figure—leading to surreal transformations, including changes in Zora herself. The preview builds tension as Death’s commanding voice declares, “No one can escape me,” before cutting to a final shot of the bird casually puffing on a cigarette, adding a touch of dark humor.
With its unique vision and emotionally resonant storytelling, Owari no Tori is set to bring audiences a fresh and thought-provoking cinematic experience when it arrives in Japanese theaters this April.
