A photo book documenting Hikaru Utada’s nationwide tour SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024, celebrating their 25th anniversary, will be released on March 21. The book, NINE STORIES, will feature perspectives from nine renowned photographers who captured the tour in various cities. In conjunction with the release, a photo exhibition will be held at New Gallery in Jimbocho, Tokyo, from March 7 to March 30
The title NINE STORIES is inspired by the short story collection by American author J.D. Salinger. Just like the captivating tales in Salinger’s work, this project features Utada’s concerts in nine different cities, captured by nine photographers — Kazuhei Kimura, Chikashi Suzuki, Mayumi Hosokura, Rinko Kawauchi, Daido Moriyama, John Yuyi, Wing Shya, Takashi Homma, and Rika Noguchi — each bringing their unique perspectives and styles to the project.

The photo book will be sold for 2,200 yen, with each book containing 48 pages. A set of nine books in a lenticular box will be available for 15,000 yen. The individual books by each photographer will be available exclusively through the HIKARU UTADA Official Store, New Gallery Store, and Amazon.
The photo exhibition at New Gallery in Jimbocho, Tokyo, will be free to enter. During the exhibition, there will also be a sale of original prints from some of the featured works.

“NINE STORIES” Overview
This project captures Hikaru Utada’s 25th anniversary and her 6-year-awaited nationwide tour, “SCIENCE FICTION TOUR 2024,” through the perspectives of nine photographers, preserving it as a photo book and artwork to pass on to future generations.
The project name is inspired by the title of an American short story by J.D. Salinger. Like a precious story, the tour (live performance) across nine cities is documented through the unique perspectives of photographers such as Kei Kamura, Shin Suzuki, Mayumi Hosokura, Rinko Kawauchi, Daido Moriyama, John Yuyi, Wing Shya, Takashi Homma, and Rika Noguchi. These photographers, who are considered leaders in contemporary art, use the visual language of photography to weave the narrative.
This collaboration with some of the finest photographers is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, capturing a unique, never-before-seen form of live performance photography and photo books. It immortalizes Hikaru Utada’s performances—and her very existence—through the eyes of the photographers, ensuring it will endure for the next 5, 50, 100 years, and beyond.
