Scottish band MOGWAI has announced the release of their new track “GOD GETS YOU BACK” and a world tour, which will include their first Japanese tour in seven years.
Formed in 1995, MOGWAI consists of Stuart Braithwaite (guitar), Dominic Aitchison (bass), Martin Bulloch (drums), and Barry Burns (vocals/guitar/keys). Known as pioneers of post-rock since the 1990s with albums like Mogwai Young Team and Come on Die Young, the band has frequently visited Japan for solo performances and festival appearances. Their 2021 album As The Love Continues reached number one on the UK Official Album Chart, marking their first-ever chart-topping album. The band also received nominations for the Mercury Prize and won Scottish Album of the Year. In 2024, MOGWAI will release their first documentary, Mogwai: If The Stars Had A Sound, which premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, and is currently screening at film festivals worldwide.
Their latest track “GOD GETS YOU BACK” is a majestic 6-minute and 40-second piece, propelled by arpeggiated synths and building to a grand crescendo. Barry Burns revealed that, despite initially thinking the song needed a melody or lyrics, he couldn’t come up with any, so he asked his 7-year-old daughter to write the lyrics for him. The lyrics she created are the ones he ended up singing. The video for the track, directed and produced by Hand Held Cine Club (Justin and James Lockey), has also been released.
The newly announced 2025 world tour will see MOGWAI traveling across Asia, North America, the UK, and Europe. In Japan, they are scheduled to perform in Osaka on March 11 (Tuesday) and Tokyo on March 12 (Wednesday). Tickets for the Japan shows are available through an official pre-sale on eplus until September 29 (Sunday). During the tour, MOGWAI will partner with War Child, an organization dedicated to protecting, educating, and advocating for children affected by war. For each ticket sold, a charity donation of £1 / €1 / $1 / ¥150 will be made.
