The live-action film ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is set for release in Japan in 2025.
Commonly known by its nickname “Minecraft,” the game was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in 2014, three years after its official release, as the “best-selling indie game of all time.” Celebrated worldwide for its creativity and exploration, the game surpassed 300 million copies sold globally by 2023. It’s also widely used in educational materials for elementary and middle schools across Japan, showcasing its diverse impact.
The live-action adaptation marks the first time Minecraft has been made into a film. The movie is directed by Jared Hess, known for Nacho Libre. Jason Momoa plays Garrett, a long-haired man in a pink jacket, while Jack Black portrays the mysterious character known as “Steve,” the default skin name in the game. Other cast members include Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
The first teaser has also been released, featuring the iconic Beatles song “Magical Mystery Tour.” The footage shows four characters, including Garrett, who suddenly find themselves transported to the Minecraft world through a mysterious portal. The teaser highlights the vast natural landscapes made of blocks, animals, Garrett working at a crafting table, and Steve’s smug entrance.
