THE PIANO ERA 2024 will be held at the Meguro Persimmon Hall Large Hall in Tokyo on November 23 (Saturday, public holiday) and 24 (Sunday).
The event, which began in 2013, focuses on the “current state of piano music worldwide” and aims to offer an experience of the diverse developments in contemporary piano music. It explores the music’s essence, individuality, and the cultural backgrounds from which it originates. The event seeks not only to inspire fans and creators but also to encourage creative motivation.
In its sixth edition in 2024, the event will feature all newcomers, including three artists making their debut in Japan. On the first day, November 23, the American instrumental duo Balmorhea and Hanakiv, based in London and originally from Estonia, will perform for the first time in Japan. From Japan, Marihiko Hara will perform as “Marihiko Harada feat. Miwa Sakamoto,” joined by strings players Akiko Suhara, Aino Meikaru, Naoko Kakutani, and Miwa Sakamoto. Comments from Balmorhea and Harada have also been released.
Delivering our music to Japan has been a long-held dream. Nearly 20 years after the formation of Balmorhea, this dream is finally becoming a reality. We are beyond excited to meet everyone at THE PIANO ERA in November for this special occasion. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Rob and Michael, Balmorhea
About a year ago, I started composing and performing with Miwa Sakamoto. We have been discussing and sharing everything from current global events to small daily matters, not limited to music. Through this ongoing collaboration, we will present our evolving music with the trusted string players Akiko Suhara, Aino Meikaru, and Naoko Kakutani.

On the 24th (Sunday), Carlos Aguirre, a leading figure in contemporary Argentine music known for his work as a pianist, composer, singer, and poet, will make his first solo visit to Japan in seven years. Also appearing will be Büşra Kayıkçı, a Turkish architect and pianist making her debut in Japan. From Japan, Ayatake Ezaki, known for his work with WONK as well as his film scores, stage music, and solo releases, will also perform.
