The film ‘Riddle of Fire’ is set to be released in Japan on Friday, October 25th. The poster visual and trailer have also been unveiled.
This neo-adventure film was selected for the Director’s Fortnight and Camera d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, following its premiere screening. It was also chosen as the closing film for the Midnight Madness section, which showcases action, horror, and fantasy films, at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival. The story follows three mischievous kids, the “Immortal Crocodile Gang,” who, instead of playing games, embark on an adventure to obtain a blueberry pie. They face off against the “Magic Sword Crew” with the help of a witch’s daughter they meet in the forest. This film marks the feature debut of Weston Razooli, who studied graphic design and fashion design at the California Institute of the Arts and served as the writer, director, and producer of the film.
A message from the director has also been released.
Message from Director Weston Razooli
I wanted to create the ultimate children’s movie, one with a world that everyone would want to live in and be a part of. The starting point of the story comes from the spy games and board games I loved as a child. Particularly with the latter, the vintage board games I often played had simple yet intricate artwork and designs that I found very appealing as a kid. At the same time, there’s a vibe similar to “Jumanji”—once you start the game, it pulls you in with a curse-like force that keeps you going until you reach the goal. That’s exactly the kind of movie I wanted to make, and it greatly influenced the world of this film. Additionally, filming in my home state of Utah allowed me to create while reminiscing about my childhood. The supermarket featured in the movie is actually a store I used to frequent as a kid.
The trailer features scenes of the “Immortal Crocodile Gang,” consisting of Alice, Hazel, and Jodie, causing mayhem with toy guns and motorbikes. It also shows a mysterious man snatching away the eggs needed for a blueberry pie and a scene where they encounter the witch’s daughter, Petal, in the forest. Filmed in the director’s home state of Utah on 16mm film, the trailer evokes a sense of nostalgia.
