The key visual for the first exhibition of Naoya Matsumoto’s manga “Kaiju No. 8,” titled “Kaiju No. 8 Exhibition,” has been unveiled.
“Kaiju No. 8” is a battle manga serialized on the manga app “Shonen Jump+” since 2020. Set in Japan where monsters appear like disasters, the story revolves around Kafka Hibino, who admired the Japan Defense Force that combats monsters but ends up transforming into a monster himself due to a mysterious organism. The manga won the Grand Prize in the “Web Manga” category at the 2021 Next Manga Awards and was adapted into a TV anime in 2024. It is also available worldwide in 8 languages (excluding some regions), garnering attention both domestically and internationally.
The exhibition will be held at Tokyo Dome City Gallery AaMo in Suidobashi, Tokyo, from September 13th (Friday) to November 10th (Sunday). The unveiled key visual, drawn specifically for the exhibition by Naoya Matsumoto, features characters from the Japan Defense Force assembled against the backdrop of the looming Kaiju No. 8.
Furthermore, details of the exhibition and some of the merchandise available for sale at the venue have been released. Visitors to the exhibition can enjoy approximately 120 framed illustrations of memorable scenes, set in the theme of “touring the base as a Defense Force cadet.” Additionally, life-sized displays of Defense Force equipment and weapons will be exhibited. Each visitor will receive one of seven designs of “Japan Defense Force Visual Cards,” featuring Naoya Matsumoto’s original illustrations that change weekly.
Exclusive merchandise, including original goods created for the exhibition, will also be available for purchase.
On the opening day, September 13th (Friday), entry will require advance reservation, but from September 14th (Saturday) onwards, visitors can enter without specific time slots. Pre-sales for tickets with special merchandise are ongoing, offering a set of clear bookmarks featuring designs of characters from the exhibition’s original illustration and the Japan Defense Force members depicted in Naoya Matsumoto’s artwork.
