Billie Eilish made her first visit to Japan in nearly two years since her solo concert in August 2022, arriving at Narita Airport on June 19th, Wednesday, to promote her 3rd album “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT,” released on May 17th. She appeared in her signature baggy style, delighting 250 fans who had gathered eagerly to catch a glimpse of her. She greeted them saying, “Hi! It’s Billie. I’m so happy to be back in Japan. I love you all.” She warmly interacted with fans, posing for photos, and engaging in hugs and handshakes.
On June 20th, Thursday, she held a talk event for 50 selected attendees through a lottery draw.
Regarding the album, Billie commented, “I started working on this since my last visit to Japan. It was tough at times, but before I knew it, it was completed.” Reflecting on her past work, she added, “I’ve always been true to myself, but I used to resist showing vulnerability. In the past, I also had this feeling of wanting to create something that would please everyone. But this time, I feel like I could really pursue the music I wanted to create.” She looked back, considering it her most honest album to date.
When asked, “What was the most memorable experience in Japan for you?” Billie Eilish responded, “Since my first visit at age 14, Japan has been a beloved country to me. When I performed for the first time at Summer Sonic in 2018, I felt a deep love from everyone towards my music. It was touching, I was moved. Also, I can’t forget the enthusiasm of fans who welcomed me at the airport this time. These moments will be precious in my life going forward.”
Regarding her song “CHIHIRO,” inspired by Japanese anime, she commented, “I created this song from the perspective of being the protagonist in an anime. While I’ve worked on movie theme songs and soundtracks before, I love imagining and creating music for someone who isn’t me.”
Billie showed sincere commitment by staying past the scheduled time. In closing, she addressed her Japanese fans, saying, “Thank you all for your continuous support. Your feelings reach me loud and clear. I look forward to meeting you all again.” With that, she left the stage.
On June 21st (Friday), a surprise signing event was held at Tower Records Shibuya for Billie Eilish. The information was released at 3:00 PM, and the limited 100 tickets for participation were distributed and sold out within just 14 minutes. When Billie appeared on stage, she addressed the gathered fans, saying, “Thank you for coming today! I love you all,” and spent time interacting with them.
Billie Eilish’s latest album, “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT,” acclaimed as her masterpiece reaching over 1 billion streams worldwide and topping charts in more than 25 countries, has set a new record in her career. Fans eagerly await her next visit to Japan.
