‘YOLO Hundred Yuan Love,’ the Chinese Remake of ‘100 Yen Love,’ Premieres Friday, July 5

The Chinese remake of the film ‘100 Yen Love’ (2014), ‘YOLO Hundred Yuan Love,’ will open in Japan on Friday, July 5.

The film was an exceptionally long-running hit, winning a total of 21 awards in Japan and abroad, including the “Japan Academy Award” for Best Actress for its lead actress, Sakura Ando, who took on the challenge of boxing. The film was remade into ‘Ruler Guntan,’ directed by and starring Jah Lin, a comedian and actor who has gained national popularity in China, and was released in February 2024. With a final box-office revenue of approximately 3.5 billion yuan (approximately 73 billion yen) and a cumulative worldwide box-office revenue of over 74 billion yen including the U.S., the film has created such a huge sensation that it has become a social phenomenon that the boxing population in China is increasing, and it will be urgently released in Japan under the Japanese title “YOLO: Love in 100 Yuan”. The film will be released in Japan under the Japanese title ‘YOLO Hundred Yuan Love,’ and 13 scenes that show the harsh training scenes, dating scenes, and human drama have also been unveiled.

Jia Lin has over 17.7 million followers on the social networking service Weibo, and has appeared eight times on CCTV’s “Spring Festival Lunar New Year’s Eve,” the Chinese New Year program most desired by Chinese celebrities, and is very active in Chinese comic and stage comedy. With the release of this film, she became the fourth female actor in Chinese film history to have a box-office revenue of over 10 billion yuan (over 200 billion yen), and is now considered one of China’s leading comedians.

Her first film as a director/writer/leading actress, “你好，李煥英 (你好，李煥英)” (2021), became the second highest grossing film of all time in China and a worldwide box office hit, grossing approximately 90 billion yen. The film was also released in Japan under the Japanese title “Hello, My Mother” (2022).

The decision to produce “YOLO: Love at 100 Yuan” was made after a Chinese film company offered the Toei Group to remake the film after Jia Lin was impressed by Sakura Ando in “Love at 100 Yen”. The remake, which utilizes her strong will and determination as well as her talent as a comedian, which is one of her strengths, depicts “a human drama about finding oneself and becoming stronger,” and is the “strongest empowering movie” that will make your heart sing with excitement. It was also noted that during the production, Jah Lin was absent from the media for more than a year, and despite being over 40 years old, he continued his grueling training in parallel with the filming of the main story.

The Japanese title “YOLO,” which was also the title of the film when it was released in the U.S., stands for “You Only Live Once. It is also the message that the filmmakers wanted to convey to the audience through the film.
