The Austrian film ‘Club Zero’ will be released in Japan on December 6 (Friday).
The film, which was officially entered into the Competition section at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, is a thriller about a nutrition teacher, Novak, who is assigned to a prestigious school, and his students. Novak teaches his students “conscious eating,” a diet that “is healthy and liberates you from the constraints of society,” and brainwashes them verbally. The film follows the students as they join a mysterious club called “Club Zero” with Novak and choose their “ultimate health regimen.
The director is Jessica Hausner, whose four previous feature films, including ‘Little Joe,’ have been selected for the Cannes Film Festival. The role of Novak is played by Mia Wasikowska, known for her performances in ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Crimson Peak,’ and ‘Stoker,’ who received a direct offer from the director.
The film’s visual was also released in conjunction with the decision of the Japanese release date. The contrast between the students with stiff expressions and a disturbing air, and Novak smiling while surrounded by the students, and his hand carving a small potato on a large plate, is striking.
The film will be screened at “Austrian Film Week 2024 [Our Very Eye],” which will be held at Theater Image Forum in Shibuya, Tokyo, from June 29 (Sat) to July 5 (Fri), with Jessica Hausner on stage.
