Miranda Julai’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo, “MIRANDA JULY: F.A.M.I.L.Y.” will be held at Prada Aoyama from May 9 (Thu) to August 26 (Mon).
Miranda Julai is a filmmaker, performance artist, and writer based in Los Angeles. She has written, directed, and starred in films such as “The Rainbow World of You and Me,” which won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and “The Future. His artistic works include the website “Learning to Love You More,” co-created with Harrell Fletcher, and the messaging app “Somebody,” created with Miu Miu. Julai’s novels have been published in 23 countries, and her latest book, “All Fours,” will be released by Riverhead Books in May.
The exhibition, which will be held on the 6th floor of the Prada Aoyama store, will feature Julai’s latest work, the multi-channel video installation “F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Falling Apart Meanwhile I Love You),” a one-year collaboration with seven strangers conducted via Instagram. Participants sent video reactions to a series of prompts (instructions and questions) from Juray, which Juray then transformed into artwork using the cut-out tools of a free editing app for social networking content. The surrealistic performance allows viewers to see Juray and the participants exploring intimacy and boundaries through a completely new physical language.
Juray himself and curator Mia Locks commented on the exhibition.
We are trying to achieve what I believe is one of the things that Instagram can achieve, which is to be loved and be energized by being loved!
Miranda Julai.
This is Julai’s preferred form of activity. She initiates the interaction and controls it to a certain degree, but also welcomes the desires and actions of others in the process. She experiments with shared power and control in a playful way.
Mia Rocks.
A public conversation between Julai and Rocks will be held at the venue on Wednesday, July 17. A catalogue published by Fondazione Prada will also be available for purchase. In addition to the conversation between Julai and Cindy Sherman, an essay by Rocks will also be included.
