The latest production of NODA-MAP led by Hideki Noda, “Love in Action,” will be performed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Playhouse in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, from July 11 (Thu), and it was also announced that Jun Matsumoto, Masami Nagasawa, and Eita Nagayama will appear in the production.
Hideki Noda is a playwright, director, and actor from Nagasaki Prefecture. He is also known for his work as professor emeritus at Tama Art University and artistic director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space. After studying in London for a year from 1992 as an exchange student under the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Overseas Study Program for Artists, he established the theater planning and production company Noda Map (NODA・MAP) in 1993. Noda’s works are characterized by word play and remakes, and he is good at bringing new perspectives to everyday language and classic works. Rabbit Runs on Waves, also starring Issei Takahashi, will be released in 2023 and will focus on the Yodogo-go hijacking incident.
In “Love in Action,” the first production in a year since “Rabbit, Running on Waves,” also staged at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Playhouse in 2023, Noda uses “The Brothers Karamazov,” Dostoevsky’s masterpiece representing 19th century Russian literature, as an entry point to create the story of the “Karamatsu Brothers,” a “family of fireworks makers in a certain place in Japan in a certain period of time,” who are “the brothers of the Karamatsu Tribe. The story is about the “Karamatsu Brothers,” “a family of pyrotechnicians from a certain time in a certain place in Japan. Matsumoto, Nagasawa, and Nagayama play the “Karamatsu Brothers,” the first time the three have appeared together. Matsumoto plays the first son, a pyrotechnician, Nagayama the second son, a physicist, Nagasawa the “third son,” a clergyman, and Naoto Takenaka is the father of the three brothers.
Matsumoto, who has participated in numerous workshops since meeting Noda 20 years ago, will make his first NODA-MAP appearance on stage in 13 years. Nagasawa will be making her first appearance in NODA MAP since “THE BEE” in 2021, and Nagayama will be making his first appearance in NODA MAP since “MIWA” in 2013 and “Gyakurin” in 2016.
In addition to the Tokyo production, performances in Kitakyushu and Osaka have also been announced, as well as a London production under the English title “Love in Action”.
