BRUTUS JAZZ WEEKEND 2024 Features Performances by Masaki Hayashi and Miu Sakamoto and More

BRUTUS JAZZ WEEKEND 2024″ will be held from Friday, April 5 to Monday, April 8 at BAROOM in Minami Aoyama, Tokyo.

Linked with “BRUTUS,” which was released in February, this event allows visitors to experience the “entrance of jazz” from various angles, including special sessions and collaborations. This time, an immersive audio system “d&b Soundscape,” which uses an object-based system, will be used at the venue to create an immersive and realistic sound experience.

On the first day, Friday the 5th, “Shun Ishiwaka SONGBOOK TRIO” will perform from 19:30 and “Banksia Trio” from 21:10. Ishiwaka’s “song project” with Mami Kakudo on vocals and Shudai Nishida on guitar, with Ishiwaka performing mainly on piano. Banksia Trio” is a trio featuring Takashi Sugawa on bass, Masaki Hayashi on piano, and Ishiwaka on drums.

On the following day, Saturday the 6th, “Mark de Clive-Lowe RONIN ARKESTRA” will perform from 17:00, “BIGYUKI x Daito Manabe” from 18:40, and “Yasuaki Shimizu x Rei Kunimoto” from 20:40. Mark de Clive-Lowe RONIN ARKESTRA” is a band formed by keyboardist/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe with up-and-coming Japanese musicians MELRAW, Baba Tomoaki Baba, and Shinpeira Ryoke participate in this band. BIGYUKI x Daito Manabe” is the first collaboration between the two artists, who met for a project in “BRUTUS. Yasuaki Shimizu and Rei Kunimoto” is a special live performance by composer/producer/saxophonist Shimizu and sound artist Kunimoto, who toured Europe twice in 2018 with the same lineup.

On the third day, Sunday the 7th, “Baba Tomoaki NEW PROJECT” will perform at 17:00, “Masatake Unno SPECIAL QUINTET” at 18:40, and “Marty Holoubek’s SPECIAL BAROOM BAND with Terumasa Hino” at 20:20. The “Baba Tomoaki NEW PROJECT” will be performed at the same time. Baba Tomoaki NEW PROJECT” is a new project by Baba, who drew attention as the saxophone player for the main character in the movie “BLUE GIANT. The trio with Shota Watanabe on keyboards and Kazuhiro Odagiri on drums will perform mainly original songs for the project.

Masatake Unno SPECIAL QUINTET” is a quintet formed by Unno, a pianist based in New York, for this project. The members are Mirai Hirose on trumpet, Akiba Nakajima on alto saxophone, Kaino Sinsa on bass, and Gene Jackson on drums. Marty Holoubek’s SPECIAL BAROOM BAND with Terumasa Hino,” which will perform as the last performer of the day, is a trio led by bassist Marty Holoubek and featuring pianist David Bryant and drummer Gene Jackson. Jackson formed the trio. Legendary drumpeter Terumasa Hino will join as a guest for this one-day session.

The final day, Monday the 8th, will feature the duo of Hayashi and Miu Sakamoto, who also performed on the first day with the “Banksia Trio. Hayashi has participated in many studio works, including those of artists such as Jun Miyake and Ringo Shiina, as well as composing for the movie “Wonderful World” and performing in the anime “Yuri! on ICE.

Sakamoto, who is also active as a vocalist and writer, will hold his first solo live performance in Korea in 2023, and is scheduled to perform at the music festival “ImagineLand Tenkusochi 2024” in Hong Kong in April, actively expanding his live activities overseas as well. He also performs at festivals and many other events as the unit “Oh Ame” with singer-songwriter Yuichi Ohata.
