Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga “Tanabata no Kuni” is getting a live-action drama adaptation, exclusively available on Disney+ starting July.
Written by Iwaaki, famed for “Parasyte” and “Historie,” the manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits from 1996 to 1999. The narrative revolves around Yoji Minamimaru, an ordinary college student with a peculiar yet seemingly useless superpower – the ability to create small holes in anything. As he confronts a crisis that could disrupt the world, the adaptation was once deemed impossible due to its scale and provocative nature. However, Disney+’s “Star” brand, known for productions like “Hannibal,” has confirmed the live-action drama.
Kanata Hosoda, the emerging actor celebrated for his performances in “Dragon Zakura” and “What Will You Do, Ieyasu?” is set to embody the character of Yoji Minamimaru in the upcoming live-action adaptation. The director will be Yusuke Taki, known for his work on “Omameda Towako and Her Three Ex-Husbands” and “In Love and Deep Water.” Comments from Iwaaki, Hosoda, and Taki have also been shared.
I’m really looking forward to it. The visual adaptation of my manga is like a grandchild to me, so it doesn’t hurt even if it gets right into my eyes. As a grandfatherly figure, I can’t keep up with the tricks and visuals they’ll showcase, but I believe it will be exciting.
Original story by Hitoshi Iwaaki
I feel that, as the lead role, this has been the most engaging experience I’ve had in terms of connecting with the set and the entire staff. This was made possible by the cast and, above all, the heartfelt acceptance from the staff team. As the filming progressed, my awareness and determination in the lead role became stronger.
Starring: Kanota Hosoda
In terms of the story, comprehending all the logic in an instant might be a bit challenging. However, precisely because of this, I believe the aspects portrayed in the original work have been carefully crafted. The pacing of the narrative makes it very viewer-friendly, so even those discovering this work for the first time should be able to enjoy it without feeling too daunted.
I’m excited about the challenge of bringing “Tanabata no Kuni” to life. Despite the many challenges we faced to get to this point, I am determined to face them alongside the people of Marugamimura, not losing to the spirit embodied by Mr. Hitoshi Iwaaki. It has become a story that I truly want everyone living in present-day Japan to see, so I hope you all enjoy it.
