“Parasyte: The Grey” will be distributed on Netflix from April 5 (Friday).
Based on Hitoshi Iwaki’s manga “Parasite,” which depicts a high school student’s coexistence with a “parasite,” a mysterious creature that takes over a human’s brain to control its body and prey on other humans, and the struggle for survival between “humans” and “parasites,” the series has sold more than 25 million copies in over 30 countries and regions, and in Japan it has been adapted into an anime and live-action film. The Parasite” is set in Korea, where a conflict occurs between “The Parasite” and “The Gray,” a special unit that has been set up to stop “parasites” who cause incidents in various places. The film depicts the story of the main character, Chung Soo In, who somehow ends up living in harmony with “Heidi,” a “parasite. Directed by Yong Sang-ho, the director of the zombie film series “New Infections,” the film was inspired by the idea of “what would happen if parasitic organisms were to fly into Korea?
The role of Jeong Soo-in will be played by Jeong Soon-yi, who also played the role in the film “Soul Mate. In addition, Koo Gyo-hwan plays Sol Gang-woo, who is chasing after a parasite to find his missing sister; Lee Jung-hyun plays the head of “The Grey” team; Kwon Hye-hyo plays Soo-in’s senior detective at the police station, and Kim In-kwon plays her junior colleague.
The director stated in making the film, “When I was studying manga and animation, “Parasites” was like a textbook for manga, and expanding and visualizing the world of “Parasites” was like a dream ideal come true. The original author of “Parasites,” Iwamaki, also commented on the film adaptation.
Above all, I was thrilled by the “new story. I am the author of the original manga, but I can also be an audience member who will be surprised and moved by the story. When the original manga was visualized in Japan, I thought that the original manga was like a “child” to me, and the animation and live-action film was like a “grandchild” to me. A “child” is born in a small room through personal handiwork, and a “grandchild” is born when that child goes out into the world and encounters the wisdom, experience, and skills of many people. I am very happy that “grandchildren” were born in Korea this time. And if it means a “new story” set in a different place, I thought it would take me to a world far beyond my imagination.
