Jean-Luc Godard’s short film “Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: ‘Phony Wars,'” directed/written/performed by Jean-Luc Godard, will be released on February 23 (Friday, national holiday) at Shinjuku Musashino Theater, Cine Switch Ginza, Human Trust Cinema Shibuya and other theaters nationwide.
The 20-minute short film is a collage of handwritten text, drawings, photographs, and images, with music and narration, and is the last work of Jean-Luc Godard, who passed away in September 2022. Fabrice Aragno, who shot and edited the film, said, “Jean-Luc used sticky notes on paper to imagine the rhythm of the film, directing the images and sounds. I could see the images unfold before my eyes. It was a film that existed in the present moment. It was incredibly simple, but the way the images and sounds were set in place was very powerful. Jean-Luc saw the film and said, “This is my masterpiece.
The film was produced by Saint Laurent Productions, a film company established by the fashion brand Saint Laurent. Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello said, “This film reveals a unique creative process of Jean-Luc Godard,” adding, “At the same time, it is a draft that shows the ideas, references and images that the artist had in mind for a film that will never see the light of day. It is also a draft that shows the ideas, references, images, etc., that the artist had in mind for a film that will never see the light of day.
