The film “The Old Town Girls” will open in theaters on Friday, August 25.
Inspired by the real-life 2011 kidnapping of a classmate by a mother and daughter, the film, which had its world premiere at the 33rd Tokyo International Film Festival in 2020, is the debut feature by Shen Yu, a young filmmaker from Shanghai.
The protagonist, Shui Qing, is a high school student living with his father, stepmother, and younger brother in the heavily industrialized city of Panzhihua in Sichuan Province. He lives a happy high school life, fighting with Jin Shi, the leader of a group of wealthy but troubled parents who do not get along, and Ma Yueyue, who is beautiful enough to be a local advertising model but is frightened by her father’s violence. Then one day, her real mother, Chu Ting, who had left the old city with her newborn Shui Chin and gone to Chengdu, returns. The story goes that Shui Qing’s life changes drastically when she is reunited with the mother she has longed for.
