To commemorate the release of “The Great Freedom,” a film about Hans, the main character who suffered absurd persecution in post-World War II Germany, where male homosexuality was banned, “Paragraph 175” will be screened again at Bunkamura Le Cinéma Shibuya Miyashita. The film will be screened in Tokyo for the first time in nine years, in 35mm print, and will be limited to three screenings on July 21 (Fri.), 22 (Sat.), and 23 (Sun.), starting at 18:00 each day.
The screening on the 22nd will include a talk show by journalist/author Yuji Kitamaru and Sho Akita of Normal Screen, which handles films by queer filmmakers.
The documentary film “Paragraph 175” is based on interviews with people who were sent to concentration camps under the Nazi regime but barely survived, and clearly depicts the situation at the time when homosexuality was forbidden.
