The JAPAN CUTS film festival will be held from July 26 (Wed) to August 6 (Sun) at the Japan Society Theater in New York City, USA.
Since its inception in 2007, “JAPAN CUTS” has screened more than 300 Japanese films, including U.S. premieres, and this year, the 16th edition of the festival will feature 17 films in the “Feature Slate” section, 6 films in the “Next Generation” section featuring films by young filmmakers, and a special screening of a new film by a Japanese director. The opening screening will be “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK”.
“Under the Turquoise Sky” will be screened in the “Centerpiece section”, which features films of note. The film’s lead actor, Yuya Yagira, received the CUT ABOVE Award, which Japan Cuts usually awards to directors and actors who have made significant contributions to the cinema.
In addition, the “Classics” section screened the documentary film “Tokyo Melody” as a tribute to composer Sakamoto Ryuichi, who passed away in March of this year. Directed by Elizabeth Lennard, the film documents Sakamoto Ryuichi in the mid-1980s, after the breakup of YMO.
