The Color Purple” is set to premiere in Japan on February 9, 2024 (Friday), accompanied by the release of a special trailer and scene photos.
This musical adaptation, based on Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film of the same name, is executive produced by Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Quincy Jones. The storyline follows Celie, who overcomes adversity and transforms her life with unwavering strength after enduring abuse and an unwanted marriage.
The remake, marking the 40th anniversary of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is directed by emerging Ghanaian filmmaker Brits Bazaule. Bazaule, renowned for his work in black culture, previously directed “Kojo’s Burial” and contributed to Beyoncé’s “Black is King.”
The special feature opens with a poignant vow of unity between Harry Bailey’s sister and sister, followed by Fantasia Barrino’s captivating portrayal of the grown-up Celie. The video also showcases the extraordinary talents of Academy and Grammy Award winner H.E.R.
