The Tokyo Odaiba Triennale 2025 has unveiled its dates, artistic director, and initial list of participating artists.
Scheduled after its announcement in May, this event is spearheaded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Odaiba Triennale Executive Committee, with collaboration from institutions like the National Museum of Science and Innovation. This pioneering international art festival will showcase contemporary art in Odaiba, a popular tourist and Olympic/Paralympic site. Venues currently confirmed include Odaiba Park, Fuji Television’s headquarters and Bay Studio, and the National Museum of Science and Innovation.
In this announcement, the event period has been set from October 18, 2025 (Saturday) to December 25, 2025 (Thursday). The theme, “Awakening the Peaceful Sleep with Jokisen – Wildness, Chaos, and the New World,” was also revealed. The artistic directors for the triennale will be Akira Tatehata, Akiko Miki, and Junya Yamamine.
The initial lineup of artists announced for the event features iconic figures like Yayoi Kusama, Yuriko Sasaoka, Abraham Poincheval, Yagi no Me, Lu Yang, and the innovative group Blast Theory. The roster is set to expand with more artists to be revealed, aiming to include approximately 40 participants in total.
Additionally, the key visual designed by the creative duo KIGI, composed of Ryo Suke Uehara and Yoshishige Watanabe, has been unveiled. The logo incorporates the letter “o” from Odaiba, combined with images of a cannon mouth that was once built in Odaiba and the entrance to a tunnel. A comment from KIGI has also been received.
Delving into Odaiba, the venue for the Tokyo Odaiba Triennale, reveals a unique history where cannons, intended for defense, were left unused and forgotten. When looking into the mouths of these dormant cannons, one might imagine that they’re not merely weapons but portals—a time tunnel leading to the future. The “o” in our logo embodies both the cannon’s mouth and the entrance to this metaphorical tunnel. This vision inspired the design of the “o” in “odaiba.” Much like stories from all eras and cultures that tell of tunnels transporting people to different worlds, this tunnel symbolizes the connection between reality and the fantastical. The triennale itself seeks to bridge the present with the future, the tangible with the abstract, inviting artists and audiences to journey between them. Art is the catalyst for creating the future, and creation, in turn, shapes it. This powerful concept is woven into the logo and main visual of the event.
