“Tokyo Odaiba Triennale 2025” will be held from October to December 2025.
The event will be hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Odaiba Triennale Executive Committee, with the cooperation of the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) and other organizations. This is the first time that an international art festival centering on contemporary art will be held in Odaiba, which is widely known both domestically and internationally as a tourist destination and the site of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
The venues will include Daiba Park (Daiba 3), known for the ruins of gun emplacements and gun powder depots, Fuji Television’s headquarters building and Wangan Studios in the Odaiba area, and Miraikan, where the “Showcase Program” of “SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024” is currently being held. The details of the event and the official website will be announced in the fall of 2024.
Comments from Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and Odaiba Triennale Executive Committee Chairman Ryunosuke Endo have been released in response to the decision.
Prologue to the Tokyo Odaiba Triennale
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike
The Tokyo Odaiba Triennale 2025″ will be held from October next year, set against the backdrop of the Bay Area, blessed with natural waters and serving as the world’s gateway to the sea.
In 2025, it will be a year of major sporting events such as the World Athletics Championships and the Deaflympics. During this special time when many visitors from around the world are expected to come, hosting an international art festival in this historically significant place where Japan encountered new cultures during the late Edo period will allow Tokyo to dynamically showcase its unique values and charms through art, further elevating the city’s artistic and cultural landscape.
Art breathes life into cities, enhances their allure, and brings joy and inspiration to each of us. The questions posed by cutting-edge art about the future will serve as driving forces for building better societies and creating sustainable urban environments.
I’m excited to see what kind of art we’ll encounter in 2025 and how the city of Tokyo will continue to evolve.
We are pleased to announce that, together with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Odaiba Triennale Executive Committee will hold the inaugural “Tokyo Odaiba Triennale 2025.”
Odaiba, now synonymous with the waterfront city center, has a history dating back to the Edo period and is also known as a newly developed futuristic urban area. Originally constructed by the Tokugawa shogunate as a “台場” (Daiba), a fortified place with cannons, to protect Edo from foreign threats following Commodore Perry’s arrival in 1853, Odaiba has evolved over time. The island beneath the Rainbow Bridge and the historic “Daiba Park,” once a military fortification, retain the remnants of the original Odaiba to this day.
The charm of Odaiba lies in its harmonious blend of old Edo and modern Tokyo, existing simultaneously in its beautiful waterfront location. Hosting events such as entertainment festivals and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games has enhanced the city’s appeal. Therefore, as an event to further revitalize the Daiba area, we aim to hold an international art festival centered around contemporary art, showcasing Tokyo’s appeal to the world through the power of entertainment and art.
In an increasingly uncertain world, the power of art becomes ever more crucial. By providing visitors to the venue with opportunities to interact with contemporary art pieces, we hope to offer moments of inspiration, joy, entertainment, and healing, or even serve as a catalyst for reflection and contemplation. Moreover, creating experiences where people encounter new perspectives and values in Tokyo’s Odaiba will bring immense joy.
From this historical site that once served as Japan’s gateway to the world, we aspire to open up new horizons and present the power of art and culture to the world through diverse perspectives, looking towards the future. We hope that the Tokyo Odaiba Triennale will become an event that leaves a lasting impression on people’s memories.
