The official trailer for the Spanish film ‘The Elderly’ has been released ahead of its premiere on Friday, August 30th.
Set in Madrid during a record-breaking heatwave, this “climate change horror” film centers on Manuel, an 80-year-old man who witnesses his wife Rosa leap to her death from their balcony. From that day forward, Manuel’s condition deteriorates rapidly, and he begins to harbor murderous intentions toward his family, including his son Mario, who tries to care for him. Meanwhile, the city, sweltering under the extreme heat, is overrun by elderly people exhibiting increasingly bizarre and violent behavior, seemingly “awakening” due to the intense heat.
Directed by Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, in their second feature film collaboration following 2021’s ‘Paralympico,’ ‘The Elderly’ stars Zorion Eguileor, known for his role in ‘The Platform’ (released in 2019, with a 2021 release in Japan), as Manuel, and Gustavo Salmerón, recognized for his performances in ‘End of the Century,’ ‘Body Armor,’ and ‘Forbidden Love,’ as Mario.
The trailer features chilling scenes, including Rosa’s final words—”The elderly must die” and “For the sake of the next generation”—before she jumps from the balcony, an elderly man rising from a wheelchair to attack a younger person, and a blood-covered elderly woman turning towards the camera from the balcony.
