July’s “exPoP!!!!!” Unveils Meme Tokyo, Yukkyun, PERO PERO CANDY, and mayu Performances

NiEW presents the free-entry music event “exPoP!!!!! Vol.164” featuring Meme Tokyo, Yukkyun, PERO PERO CANDY, and mayu will be held at Spotify O-nest in Shibuya, Tokyo on July 19 (Fri).

In 2021, Meme Tokyo made a major debut from the MEME TOKYO label within Toys Factory as a sister unit to Dempagumi.inc. Comprising MEW, RITO, SOLI, SAE, MITSUKI, and NENE, this six-member unit spreads like a “meme” – a cultural gene that infectiously expands from person to person. Crossing various cultures, they disseminate their concepts and styles worldwide, passing the baton to the next generation as a female idol group of the Reiwa era. On June 26 (Wednesday), they will release their latest EP “MEMETIC WORLD.”

Yukkyun was born in 1995 in Okayama Prefecture. She is a member of the soundtrack-style avant-pop unit “Den’ei to Shonen CQ.” Since 2021, Yukkyun has actively pursued solo activities under his self-produced “DIVA Project.” He has contributed lyrics to Dempagumi.inc and WEST., written columns, critiqued films, and appeared on the TBS Podcast “Y2K Shinsho,” showcasing her overflowing love for J-POP divas and his free aesthetic sense. Scheduled to release her first album in two and a half years, “Born Again You,” in September, she has been leading with a series of pre-releases starting with “Logout Bonus” in May, continuing for four consecutive months.

PERO PERO CANDY is a sibling pop rap unit from Osaka consisting of older brother SUNNY-PLAY and younger sister Janet Mayukai. Their mission revolves around delivering a “gal mindset” to those at the edge of the Earth. They have been recognized as leading Japanese artists shaping the “Future 25” of music by Rolling Stone Japan and have been selected as “Next Trend Chosen by High School Students” by Shibuya Trend Research. Their younger sister’s vocals and rap as “Low Bass Girl” and the track-making videos by their “Genius Brother” have gained popularity on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, making them a viral hit known as “GAL of Interest.” Their songs on TikTok have accumulated over 380 million plays, and they have charted consistently on Spotify’s “Viral TOP50” and Billboard JAPAN’s “TikTok Weekly Top 20” for seven consecutive weeks.

Alternative singer-songwriter mayu was selected to perform through an audition hosted by TuneCore Japan. In April 2023, she released the single “Greedy / Colorful,” marking her return after three years and accelerating her activities. She followed up with releases in September, “We Are,” and in October, “waltz,” all arranged and produced by noon’s Naoto Tsumashima (Ba). Since hosting a band one-man show at Shimokitazawa THREE in Tokyo in April 2024, she has energetically continued performing live with a band setup.
