The first solo exhibition in Japan by the art collective MSCHF, titled “No shoes. No phone. No service.,” is currently being held at the gallery “3110NZ by LDH kitchen” in Shibuya, Tokyo, starting from January 17th (Wednesday).
MSCHF, which began its activities in New York’s Brooklyn in 2019, is an art collective known for presenting conceptual visual expressions addressing the irrationality and absurdity of systems such as human culture, politics, and monetary societies. Their works, created using cutting-edge technology, ironically depict the nature of contemporary consumer society.
The exhibition features the “Celebrity iPhones” series and the “Wavy Sneakers” series, both of which were presented at the NY gallery PERROTIN in 2022. Celebrity iPhones” is a series of iPhone artworks with actual phone numbers of celebrities, which expresses the ambivalent themes of “mob mentality” and “privacy” that are constantly triggered in the media society. Wavy Sneakers” is a series of works that deform various brands of sneakers into the shape of waves. The work is critical in that it includes the question, “To what extent are the rights of a brand protected by trademark registration valid when its logo or design is deformed and distorted?
In addition, a solo exhibition at the gallery NANZUKA UNDERGROUND in Shibuya, Tokyo, is scheduled for early 2025, and this exhibition will allow visitors to enjoy MSCHF’s work up close and personal.
