Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture Connecting the World” will be held from Thursday, January 11 to Sunday, March 10 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Panasonic Shiodome Museum in Higashi-Shinbashi, Tokyo and the 100th anniversary of the Imperial Hotel’s second main building.
Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect known as the “Master of Modern Architecture. He is known for his work on the Kaufman Residence (Ochisuiso), the Guggenheim Museum, the second main building of the Imperial Hotel in Hibiya, Tokyo, known as the Wright Pavilion, and the Jiyu Gakuen School in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, among others. He is also said to have been influenced by Ukiyoe, and devised a new style of drawing, characterized by the size of the margins and composition.
The exhibition consists of Wright’s hand-drawn drawings of each building, which are on view for the first time in Japan, as well as approximately 360 documents, including photographs. Also on display is an elaborate replica of the Imperial Hotel model Wright himself created 100 years ago, which was 3D scanned and printed in collaboration with Kyoto University and the Kyoto Institute of Technology. In addition, a full-scale model of the “Usonian House,” a residential building Wright worked on from the late 1930s, will be available for visitors to experience the space from the entrance to the living room. During the exhibition period, some of the exhibits will be changed; the first half will be on display until February 13 (Tuesday), and the second half from February 15 (Thursday) onward.
Related events include a lecture by Masaru Mizukami, professor of the Faculty of Environmental and Human Studies at the University of Hyogo, an online lecture by Ken Tadashi Oshima, professor at the University of Washington and the exhibition’s supervisor, and a slide talk by the curators. A ticket to the exhibition is required to attend the lecture and slide talk.
